Use of incentives

This document will be reviewed and updated periodically to take account of the expanding evidence-base. Any ad hoc amendments or additions made to the guidance in between these routine updates will be highlighted and dated on the last slide.

The decision to offer incentives to young people to take a chlamydia test is taken by the local PCT's who are ultimately responsible for the delivery of the local programme. The NCSP is aware of this practice and as a result is asking all PCT's who are using incentives to complete an evaluation form. These will be used by the NCSP Evaluations sub-committee to produce guidance on this for the future.

The NCSP would like to thank the Health Protection Agency Health Promotion Unit for conducting this review.

Be proactive
The National Chlamydia Screening Programme (NCSP) is a control and prevention programme targeted at the highest risk group for chlamydia infection in England, young people under 25 who are sexually active.

Chlamydia is often asymptomatic so a large proportion of cases remain undiagnosed, but infection can be diagnosed easily (young people can do the test themselves), and treated effectively.
