Sexual and Reproductive Health Services (SRH)
In 2008/09 25 per cent of all NCSP tests were performed by Sexual and Reproductive Health services; in some areas the proportion of screens performed by these services was much higher. Contraceptive and Sexual Health services are well placed to provide chlamydia screening and play an important part in the delivery of the NCSP. The services see large numbers of young people, and the staff already have expertise in discussing sexual health with young people. The addition of chlamydia screening to existing Contraceptive and Sexual Health services offers a more holistic approach to sexual health service provision, and the high levels of positivity found where young people are screened in these services shows these are the right group of people to target for screening.
Commissioners should ensure that the exact package of care to be delivered by SRH services is detailed in the contract (i.e. testing, treatment, data collection, partner notification, follow up) and that staff are appropriately trained in all areas to be undertaken. It is recommended that remuneration is linked to the number of screens performed in order to incentivise higher levels of screening.

The National Chlamydia Screening Programme (NCSP) is a control and prevention programme targeted at the highest risk group for chlamydia infection in England, young people under 25 who are sexually active.
Chlamydia is often asymptomatic so a large proportion of cases remain undiagnosed, but infection can be diagnosed easily (young people can do the test themselves), and treated effectively.
