What's new?

The recently published Public Health Outcomes Framework 2013-2016 includes an indicator on the chlamydia diagnosis rate in 15-24 year olds. Together with the earlier Future Direction of the National Chlamydia Screening Programme statement, these announcements underline the importance of reducing the prevalence of chlamydia infection in young people in England. Opportunistic screening of sexually active under-25 year olds is the means to reduce prevalence, and the diagnostic indicator is already being used successfully as a tool to measure progress.

The NCSP has developed three documents to help those with responsibilities commissioning and delivering chlamydia screening, and broader sexual health services, understand and work towards the new diagnostic indicator:

Be proactive
The National Chlamydia Screening Programme (NCSP) is a control and prevention programme targeted at the highest risk group for chlamydia infection in England, young people under 25 who are sexually active.

Chlamydia is often asymptomatic so a large proportion of cases remain undiagnosed, but infection can be diagnosed easily (young people can do the test themselves), and treated effectively.
