Implementing the NCSP
Chlamydia screening in community contraceptive services

Community contraceptive services are well placed to provide chlamydia screening, treatment and partner notification. They already provide confidential sexual health services for large numbers of sexually active young people with appropriately trained staff experienced in discussing sexual health issues with this age group.

The offer of screening can come from any one of the practice team, including receptionists, and should be accompanied by appropriate written information such as the NCSP leaflet.

Example of good practice:
In Lewisham community contraceptive services all clients are routinely offered chlamydia screening and uptake of this service is good contributing to one of the highest chlamydia screening rates in the country. Lead clinician for the service Lesley Bacon says
“the important factors have been the enthusiasm and hard work of all staff, and keeping the process as simple as possible”.

Be proactive
The National Chlamydia Screening Programme (NCSP) is a control and prevention programme targeted at the highest risk group for chlamydia infection in England, young people under 25 who are sexually active.

Chlamydia is often asymptomatic so a large proportion of cases remain undiagnosed, but infection can be diagnosed easily (young people can do the test themselves), and treated effectively.
